Harvard, MIT Suing To Block ICE From Removing Student Visas For Online Instruction

On Wednesday, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (“MIT”) sued to block new immigration restrictions that would prevent students in the United States on visas from taking classes at institutions that offer fully online courses. The lawsuit seeks a temporary restraining order and permanent injunction against the policy decision by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that would require international students whose universities move to fully online instruction amid the COVID-19 pandemic to transfer or face deportation.

On Monday, ICE announced that students on non-immigrant F-1 and M-1 visas who attend universities that operate entirely online “may not take a full online course load and remain in the United States” and that the State Department will not issue visas to students enrolled in schools that are fully online for the fall semester.

PGA Pro Sean Fredrickson And His 3 Children Among Passengers Killed In Idaho Plane Crash

PGA golf pro Sean Fredrickson, his son Hayden Fredrickson and his stepchildren Sofia and Quinn Olsen were among those who were killed on Sunday after two planes collided and fell into a lake in Idaho. The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a press release on Tuesday that two planes crashed into each other above the lake around 2:20 p.m. on Sunday. Multiple units and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the scene, though the sheriff’s office’s sonar team eventually located both planes at about 127 feet and recovered two victims’ bodies from the water.

A third victim was later recovered by dive teams and the location of two additional victims had been determined on Monday, with technical divers expected to begin recovery efforts for their bodies, Sheriff’s Lt. Ryan Higgins announced during a press conference. Higgins also said that one of the aircraft involved was a charter plane operated by Brooks Seaplane and a pilot and five passengers — four of whom were related — were aboard, while the other plane was a Cessna 206G registered to Lewiston, Idaho

Officials have not yet formally released the identities of the victims, but believe there was a total of eight passengers and crew involved and that none survived. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are currently investigating the crash.

Joe Biden Wins New Jersey, Delaware Primaries In Landslide Victory

Presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee Joe Biden won primaries in New Jersey and Delaware on Tuesday. Both states had postponed their elections from their original scheduled dates due to COVID-19.

Biden received 88.5 percent of the vote in New Jersey with 2 percent of precincts reporting, according to the Associated Press. In Delaware, Biden’s home state, Biden received 90.4 percent of the vote with less than 1 percent of precincts reporting. Delaware will allocate 21 pledged delegates while New Jersey will allocate 126 delegates. Biden has already received 2,144 delegates during the 2020 primaries. A candidate only needs 1,991 delegates in order to qualify to win the party nomination.

Although Biden is the only Democrat left in the Presidential race, the names of former candidates remain on the ballot. In New Jersey, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders garnered 11.5 percent of the vote. Sanders only received 6.5 percent of the votes in the Delaware primary.

Secretary Of State Mike Pompeo Says U.S. Has To Take “Different Path” Regarding China

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says that the United States has to take a different path with regard to China, as the previous policy of helping them open up their economy with the believe that this would lead to more political freedom has not worked,

“The theory of the case that was more economic opening will lead to more political freedoms, more fundamental rights being provided to the Chinese people, just turned out not to have been true. It just didn’t work. I’m not criticizing those who came before; we can now plainly see that it didn’t work, and that means the United States has to take a different path,” said Pompeo. The National Security Law, he said, has taken away the freedom of the people of Hong Kong. “You want the Chinese people to be successful and you want them to live good lives and you want the United States to have a relationship, but we know what communist regimes do, we know the way authoritarian regimes treat their people all too often, and that’s what we’re seeing in China today,” he added.

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms Tests Positive For COVID-19

Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said in a tweet on Monday that she tested positive for coronavirus, despite being asymptomatic. “COVID-19 has literally hit home. I have had NO symptoms and have tested positive,” she tweeted. Fulton County, Georgia, has seen nearly 9,000 coronavirus cases, according to the Georgia Department of Health.

Bottoms has recently made her name known nationally following the shooting of Rayshard Brooks, 27, a Black man who died after he was shot twice in the back by an Atlanta police officer in a Wendy’s parking lot in June. The shooting resulted in the chief of the Atlanta Police Department stepping down and two officers involved in the shooting criminally charged.

Bottoms has issued a series of executive orders to reform the police department; she is reportedly among those being considered as a running mate for presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.

U.S. Official Says It’s ‘Too Soon’ To Determine If Republican Convention Can Be Held Safely In Florida

On Sunday, a top Trump administration health official said it was not clear whether it will be safe to hold the Republican National Convention in Jacksonville next month.

As Florida continues to see record numbers of coronavirus cases, Stephen Hahn, the Food and Drug Administration commissioner, also refused to confirm President Donald Trump’s claim that 99% of coronavirus cases were harmless and called the situation a “serious problem.” Hahn was asked if it would be safe to hold the typically large RNC gathering in just seven weeks due to record numbers of people testing positive for the virus in Jacksonville and across Florida, “I think it’s too early to tell,” Hahn said on CNN’s “State of the Union” program. “We will have to see how this unfolds in Florida and elsewhere around the country.”

The Republican Party moved most of the convention activities to Jacksonville from Charlotte after a battle over coronavirus safety concerns with North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper.

Two Dead, Eight Wounded In South Carolina Nightclub Shooting

Ten people were shot on Sunday in a Greenville, South Carolina, nightclub, suspected to be related to gang-related violence. The shooting killed two people and critically injured two others, police said.

Police believe more than one shooter fled the chaotic scene at the Lavish Lounge club. which held a very large crowd for “some type of Fourth of July concert,” Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis said at a press conference. Two sheriff’s deputies were passing by the club shortly before 2 a.m. and heard shooting in a crowd of about 200 people, Lewis said. They called for backup and emergency services and went into the club, trying to evacuate, but apparently the shooter or shooters fled.

The Greenville News reported that there was a previous shooting early Saturday morning at a club next door to Lavish Lounge. Police were investigating a possible connection.

Former Presidential Candidate Herman Cain Hospitalized With Covid-19 After President Trump’s Tulsa Rally

Herman Cain, a 2012 GOP presidential candidate, is being treated for the coronavirus at an Atlanta-area hospital, according to a statement posted on his Twitter account. Cain was hospitalized less than two weeks after attending President Donald Trump’s campaign rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma; however, he did not meet with the President. Cain, 74, was hospitalized after developing “serious” symptoms but is “awake and alert,” according to the statement.

Cain was named by the Trump campaign as a co-chair of Black Voices for Trump. Dan Calabrese, who has been editor of HermanCain.com, wrote, “I realize people will speculate about the Tulsa rally, but Herman did a lot of traveling the past week, including to Arizona where cases are spiking. I don’t think there’s any way to trace this to the one specific contact that caused him to be infected. We’ll never know.”

Asked whether Cain met at the rally with other senior campaign or administration officials, Trump campaign spokesperson Tim Murtaugh responded that “contact tracing was conducted after the Tulsa rally but we do not comment regarding the medical information of individuals.”  At least six campaign staffers and two members of the Secret Service working in advance of the Tulsa rally tested positive for COVID-19. An Oklahoma-based journalist has also confirmed testing positive soon after attending the rally.
