President Biden travels to the UK to meet with PM Boris Johnson ahead of G7 summit

President Biden arrived in the UK on his first overseas trip as U.S. president, and will plan to meet Boris Johnson in Cornwall ahead of the G7 summit.   Biden is expected to deliver a warning not to let the Brexit trade dispute “imperil” the Northern Ireland peace process. The president is also hoping to show that the United States is back as a major international diplomatic force following the presidency of Donald Trump, and hopes to use the visit to Europe to shore up transatlantic alliances.

Biden flew in to the UK on Air Force One, landing at the U.S. airbase at RAF Mildenhall before heading on to Cornwall for talks with Johnson and the G7 summit in Carbis Bay. He told an audience of US military personnel and service families: “We are going to make it clear that the United States is back and democracies of the world are standing together to tackle the toughest challenges and the issues that matter most to our future.”

Biden also called for international action to end the Covid-19 pandemic, saying: “This diplomacy is essential because no single nation acting alone can meet all the challenges we face today because the world is changing.”  The United States is expected to buy 500 million more doses of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine to share through the global Covax alliance for donation to 92 lower income countries and the African Union over the next year.

President Biden signs executive orders on his first day in office after inauguration ceremony

President Joe Biden on Wednesday signed multiple executive orders that will set the tone for his new administration, aimimg to immediately reverse policies by President Donald Trump.

As one of his first acts as president, Biden signed the 17 orders before reporters in the Oval Office. Among the orders was one mandating that the United States rejoin the Paris Agreement on climate change. Trump announced the U.S. departure from the pact in 2017. The process to rejoin will take 30 days.

On the topic of the COVID-19 pandemic, Biden halted the United States’ withdrawal from the World Health Organization and also signed an order requiring face coverings to be worn inside all federal buildings in the country for the first 100 days of his presidency. Masks and distancing will be required in federal buildings and state and local governments will be asked to do the same.

Wednesday’s orders also reverse several policies on immigration, including an expansion under Trump of immigration enforcement in the United States and halting construction of the wall along the Mexico border by terminating the national emergency declaration that was used to help pay for it. Biden also reversed Trump administration restrictions on U.S. entry for travelers from primarily Muslim and African countries.

At the U.S. Capitol earlier in the day, Biden signed the Inauguration Day Proclamation and two documents making his nominations to the Cabinet and sub-Cabinet official.

President Trump pardons Steve Bannon and 141 others in final hours in office

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump granted clemency to dozens of people, including his former adviser Stephen Bannon and top election fundraiser Elliott Broidy. In his final hours at the White House, Trump pardoned 73 people and commuted the prison sentences of 70 others in one of his final actions as president of the United States.

The White House said in a statement that Trump granted a full pardon to Bannon as prosecutors pursued “charges related to fraud stemming from his involvement in a political project,” adding, “Mr. Bannon has been an important leader in the conservative movement and is known for his political acumen.” Bannon, a former senior White House adviser, was arrested and charged in August for allegedly defrauding donors of hundreds of thousands of dollars in connection to an online crowdfunding campaign known as “We Build the Wall” in 2018.

Trump had previously granted clemency in the months leading up to his final day in office to close aides, associates and friends including his former campaign adviser Roger Stone, his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his former foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos, among others.

President-elect Joe Biden and wife Jill Biden receives first dose of COVID-19 vaccine

President-elect Joe Biden and his wife, Jill got vaccinated Monday against COVID-19.  The couple each received shots at ChristianaCare Hospital in Newark, Delaware, and will need another round of the vaccinations developed by Pfizer-BioNTech in about 21 days.

The President-elect had said he wanted to receive the shot publicly to boost confidence in it.  After rolling up the left sleeve of his shirt and receiving the shot, Biden said, “I’m doing this to demonstrate that people should be prepared when it’s available to take the vaccine. There’s nothing to worry about. I’m looking forward to the second shot. So is Jill.” However, Biden added that he didn’t want to cut in line ahead of health care professionals who are the first to receive it. “The administration deserves some credit, getting us off the ground with Operation Warp Speed,” Biden said.

Vice President Mike Pence; House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.; and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., each got their shots Friday. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris is expected to receive her vaccination next week, the transition announced.
