Freida Pinto to star in Netflix series ‘Unaccustomed Earth’

Netflix announced that Freida Pinto will star in upcoming series adaptation of the Jhumpa Lahiri short story collection “Unaccustomed Earth.”

Pinto will play Parul Chaudhury in the series, which is set in an Indian-American community in Cambridge, Mass. Unaccustomed Earth was originally announced in April; as previously reported, Netflix has commissioned eight episodes.

The official logline for the show states: “an epic, soapy, and culturally vibrant drama about a tight-knit Indian American community navigating love, desire, and belonging. Rich with nuance, passion, and unforgettable characters, ‘Unaccustomed Earth’ invites you into the elite and insular Indian-American community of Cambridge, MA. When a star-crossed romance between a devoted wife and her long lost love comes to light, a scandalous affair is born and new battle lines are drawn in this intensely interconnected immigrant community.”

John Wells will co-write the adaptation with Madhuri Shekar, who both will executive produce, with Shekar serving as showrunner.  Additional executive producers include Ritesh Batra, Nisha Ganatra, Erica Saleh, Erin Jontow, Celia Costas and Lahiri.

Pinto is perhaps best known for her breakout role in the Oscar-winning film “Slumdog Millionaire,” which marked her feature debut. She has since starred in films like “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” “Knight of Cups,” “Hillbilly Elegy,” and “Mr. Malcolm’s List.” In television, Pinto is known for her roles in “Guerilla,” “Surface,” and “The Path.”

Dakota and Elle Fanning teaming up for first film together in ‘The Nightingale’

The film adaptation of Kristin Hannah’s novel The Nightingale will star Dakota Fanning and Elle Fanning – the first time the sisters have worked together in a film project. Michael Morris will direct the feature, from a script by Dana Stevens.

Hannah confirmed the news in a Facebook post, posting a photo of the book next to the film’s script, noting the movie will be released Feb. 12, 2027.  The caption read: “Can we buy tickets now? For the first time ever, sisters Dakota and Elle Fanning are set to star in a film together, in the adaptation of Kristin Hannah’s global book phenomenon The Nightingale. Directed by Michael Morris, #TheNightingaleMovie is coming exclusively to theatres February 12, 2027.”

The Nightingale follows two sisters coming of age in France on the eve of World War II and their struggle to survive the German occupation of their country. The actresses said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter when the project was first announced: “The Nightingale will be the first time we act on screen together. We have played the same character at different ages but have never spoken to each other in front of a camera. For years, we have looked for a film to do with one another and then this gem appeared. As sisters, to share our artistry with each other while bringing such a powerful sister story to life is a dream come true. We are so lucky to have our fearless director, Melanie Laurent, to guide us along on the journey. Let’s do this, sister!!”
