Melissa McCarthy & Clive Owen to star in JonBenét Ramsey limited series for Paramount+

Variety reports that Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen are set to lead a limited series on the unsolved 1996 murder of JonBenét Ramsey at Paramount+.

The story will follows the Ramsey family “before and after” the tragic murder of six-year-old JonBenét, who had participated in numerous child pageants growing up in Boulder, Colorado. The mysterious circumstances of her death generated major media attention, putting her parents as well as her brother Burke in the center of controversy.

McCarthy will play JonBenet Ramsey’s mother Patsy Ramsey and Owen will play father John Bennett Ramsey in the eight-episode true crime project, tentatively titled JonBenét Ramsey. Deadline previously reported that the limited series was expected to land at Paramount+.

The series synopsis reads that the project “follows the Ramsey family, before and after the tragedy as they go through the painful loss of a child while facing intense public scrutiny caused by a media frenzy that caused this case to captivate an entire nation. At the heart of the series, it is the story of Patsy and John Ramsey – exploring the unbreakable partnership of these two complex people – as husband and wife, as mother and father – who had committed themselves and their children to building the narrative of a perfect, privileged life only to have it destroyed one Christmas night in 1996.”

Chris McCarthy, Paramount Global Co-CEO and President/CEO of Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios, said in a statement: “Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen are an extraordinary duo to delve into this tragic story that has cast a long, haunting shadow over American culture for nearly three decades,” said

Jeff Grossman, Executive Vice President of Programming for Paramount+ adds: “JonBenét Ramsey continues to be one of the country’s most fascinating unsolved murders. The incredible talent of Melissa McCarthy, Clive Owen and the creative team led by Richard LaGravenese will illuminate her story with the acuity and nuance it deserves.”

Hurricane Milton on course to hit Florida as it reaches Category 5 with sustained 180-mph winds

On Monday, Hurricane Milton reached Category 5 — the strongest of the classifications — with maximum sustained winds of 175 mph. The National Hurricane Center (‘NHC’) said Milton has undergone “remarkable” rapid intensification after being upgraded from a tropical storm on Sunday, moving rapidly past a Category 4 strength hurricane in a matter of hours.  The NHC now considers Milton “potentially catastrophic” as it continues to make its way east toward Florida, bringing the threat of damaging winds and life-threatening storm surges.

NHC Director Michael Brennan called the rate of Milton’s intensification “extreme” in a Monday briefing, and stated it has only witnessed such rapid strengthening in a storm system twice before: Wilma (2005) and Felix (2007) – making Milton the third-fastest rapidly intensifying storm on record in the Atlantic, according to more than 40 years of NHC data.

Milton is expected to move just north of the Yucatan Peninsula on Monday and Tuesday before crossing the eastern Gulf of Mexico and approaching Florida’s west coast by Wednesday. While Milton is forecast to weaken slightly before it makes landfall on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, it is expected to still be a major Category 3 hurricane, and predicted to cause major damage to the area – with parts of the Florida Peninsula and Keys potentially seeing between 5-10 inches of rain through Wednesday night, with localized totals up to 15 inches in some areas.  There is also an increased risk of life-threatening storm surge and damaging winds for parts of Florida’s west coast beginning late Tuesday/early Wednesday which could raise water levels to as high as 8 to 12 feet in coastal areas of Florida.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis urged Floridians to follow local guidance and make emergency preparations, whether they are evacuating or sheltering at home:  “You have an opportunity today to do what you need to do to execute this plan. But time is going to start running out very, very soon.”  Kevin Guthrie, the executive director of Florida Emergency Management, stated at the governor’s news conference: “Please, if you’re in the Tampa Bay area, you need to evacuate. Drowning deaths due to storm surge are 100% preventable if you leave.”

More than 50 counties along Florida’s west coast are now under state of emergency orders and several are under evacuation orders, including Charlotte, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas and Sarasota. All evacuation orders are listed on Florida’s Division of Emergency Management website.

Georgia Supreme Court reinstates 6-week abortion ban

On Monday, the Georgia Supreme Court reinstated the state’s six-week abortion ban while it reviews an appeal from a lower court ruling that had struck down the law. The law had went into effect ater the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, with Georgia prohibiting most abortions once cardiac activity is detected (typically around six weeks).

The six-week ban will remain in place while Georgia’s highest court considers the state’s appeal; meaning, abortions will not be allowed in Georgia beyond six weeks of pregnancy. However, Georgia’s Supreme Court’s decision still left in place the lower court’s ruling blocking a separate provision of the law that had given state prosecutors broad access to the medical records of abortion patients without due process protections.

The new six-week abortion ban comes after the judge’s ruling last week that the six-week ban is unconstitutional and abortions would be permitted past six weeks. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney wrote in his order that while “the State’s interest in protecting ‘unborn’ life is compelling, until that life can be sustained by the State … the balance of rights favors the woman … our higher courts’ interpretations of ‘liberty’ demonstrates that liberty in Georgia includes in its meaning, in its protections, and in its bundle of rights the power of a woman to control her own body, to decide what happens to it and in it, and to reject state interference with her healthcare choices. That power is not, however, unlimited  When a fetus growing inside a woman reaches viability, when society can assume care and responsibility for that separate life, then — and only then — may society intervene.”

The state’s near-total abortion ban, known as the LIFE Act, was signed by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp in 2019 but didn’t take effect until July 2022. Kemp issued a statement following McBurney’s ruling, saying, “Once again, the will of Georgians and their representatives has been overruled by the personal beliefs of one judge. Protecting the lives of the most vulnerable among us is one of our most sacred responsibilities, and Georgia will continue to be a place where we fight for the lives of the unborn.”

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters Monday after the Georgia Supreme Court issued the stay: “We’re going to continue to call out these extreme agendas that we’re seeing from the other side, from Republicans. It is important to say how dangerous this is. And how this is a freedom that has been taken away from women.”

Guy Ritchie’s ‘The Gentlemen’ renewed for Season 2 at Netflix

Netflix has renewed Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen for a second season. The show, which stars Theo James and Kaya Scodelario as partners in crime, will return for eight episodes, with James and Scodelario set to reprise their starring roles as aristocrat Eddie Horniman and drug empire heiress Susie Glass, respectively. Ritchie will also return as director and writer, alongside co-writer Matthew Read. Additional casting for the second season hasn’t yet been announced; filming will get underway in 2025.

The Gentlemen is set in the same universe as Ritchie’s 2019 Miramax film “The Gentlemen,” which starred Charlie Hunnam, Matthew McConaughey, Colin Farrell and Jeremy Strong, but does not have any overlapping characters. The first season of Netflix’s The Gentlemen introduced James as Eddie Horniman as he unexpectedly became the new Duke of Halstead after inheriting his father’s sizable country estate, and discovers Glass and her incarcerated father Bobby (played by Ray Winstone) have been running a cannabis empire on it. Initially, he plans to extricate his family from the gangsters’ clutches.  The second season will kick off with Eddie and Susie ‘at the head of a massive weed empire in a world of bloodthirsty rivals.’

Two male youths arrested in assault on former NY Gov. David Paterson and his stepson

Two male youths, ages 12 and 13, have been arrested in connection to Friday night’s attack on former New York Gov. David Paterson and his stepson, Anthony Sliwa. Paterson, 70, and his 20-year-old stepson, Anthony Sliwa were victims of a gang assault along Second Avenue on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Paterson and his stepson were taken to a local hospital but have since been released. Paterson said his stepson needed five stitches on his lower lip and suffered multiple bruises.

A spokesperson for the NYPD said in a statement that police have charged the 12-year-old boy with gang assault in the second degree, and the 13-year-old boy with gang assault in the third degree. Their names were not released because they are minors. Police initially reported they were searching for five individuals in connection with the attack, and they may still be looking for more suspects.

Anthony Sliwa is the son of Curtis Sliwa, a former mayoral candidate and the founder of the Guardian Angels vigilante group. Sliwa was reportedly out walking his dog alone 45 minutes before the attack, and had argued with the teens.   Per the New York Daily News, Sliwa had spotted the teens allegedly “scaling” a fire escape on the side of a building and confronted then; when Sliwa and Paterson left their home, the altercation continued and a woman allegedly threw the first punch.

A spokesperson for the former governor released a statement Sunday saying, “Governor Paterson and his family are glad to see the suspects turned themselves in. We hope that the young people involved learn something from this unfortunate encounter. The Governor is grateful to see the kids’ parents hold them to account and would also like to thank the NYPD for their strong work.”

After the incdent, Paterson and Sliwa’s father, Curtis Sliwa, spoke out.  Paterson said: “When they were insulting him and starting to fight him, he didn’t back down. And I think that took a lot of courage, a lot of bravery.”  Curtis Sliwa added:  “He did the right thing. And then when they attacked him, he did the right thing to protect David Paterson.”

Paterson was New York’s first Black governor, serving from 2008 to 2010 after former Gov. Eliot Spitzer resigned mid-term.
