Zach Bryan fulfills promise to his late mother by earning Bachelor’s Degree

Zach Bryan has kept a promise he made to his mother before her death, and has earned his Bachelor’s degree while writing and recording music, in addition to touring across the country.

Bryan revealed his accomplishment on X, saying he took classes while on the road: “Got my bachelors yesterday after exams in the desert and green rooms to about a hundred different venues. No arrogance attached just a promise I made my mom a long while back. Bound to be a good week guys.”

Bryan’s mom Annette passed away in August 2016 at the age of 49; in a profile with The New York Times released in 2022, Bryan shared his mother’s struggle with alcohol use: “I think my mom dying really solidified the darkness in life to me. It opened that thing in you that’s like, ‘Hey, be a man now.’ People say I repress, and I’m like, no, the person that I want to tell all this stuff to is dead. And you don’t deserve me weighing in on my feelings to you.” His mom’s struggles also influenced the area of study he chose, psychology: “I just wanted to figure out why my mom was the way she was, you know? Like the most beautiful lady of all time and also kind of tortured herself.”

Rascal Flatts’ Joe Don Rooney shares life update after DUI arrest last year

Former Rascal Flatts guitarist Joe Don Rooney is sharing an update on his life, taking to social media to clarify rumors about him since his September 2021 DUI arrest. Rooney addresses his time in an alcohol treatment facility and his divorce, as well as rumors that he might be dead, and was transitioning to become a woman.

Rooney’s battle with alcoholism became public in September 2021 when he ran his car into a tree; he was arrested and later pled guilty to DUI. Rooney shared that as a result, he spent four months in rehab and has been sober for nearly 28 months. Rooney also said that his divorce from his wife or Tiffany Fallon was finalized this fall, the breakup coming after both admitted to having extramarital affairs.

Rooney’s post on X read: “I’m sorry it’s been a while since I’ve posted on any socials. It’s actually been a couple years since I’ve engaged with fans and friends on Twitter (now X) or Instagram. But I figured today, at the beginning of this brand new year 2024, would be a good day to send a message out to the world. First off, I am alive!
There have been so many rumors and opinions thrown around about me – but I’m finally healthy and ready for the world. And NO, I’m not transitioning to be a woman. That thought has never entered my mind. Nothing against the trans community whatsoever but I needed to set the record straight. My life and career took a major detour at 4a in the early morning hours of Sep 9, 2021 when I ran square into a tree and about killed myself. I was drunk and I was so far gone with my life – I was completely out of control and finished with trying to fight the fears, depression and anxieties that had spun me out in a way I’ve never experienced before. My drinking had been an issue for many years – and as they say in AA and treatment, it’s a progressive disease. I am living proof that the progressive nature of drinking can really ratchet up and as I grew older as an adult my drinking grew worse. The pressures of my career and the many mistakes I made in regards to my home life, coupled with a lot of pain and trauma from my childhood and early on in my adult life, had become too much to bear. I was not a good father – I was not a good husband – and I was not a good band mate to my business partners. I probably would’ve never taken responsibility for any of this if it hadn’t been for my car wreck on Sep 9, 2021. And btw, going to jail sucks!

Fortunately, (and I truly believe this,) God lead me into that tree safely enough to not kill me – and luckily nobody else was involved and I didn’t injure or kill anyone. I could literally be in a Federal Prison for life right now. That is the reality of what my life had become. That event lead me to treatment for my alcoholism for 4 months in the beautiful mountains of Utah. When I first got there, I didn’t want to stay. I was ashamed of myself. I was so full of fear and guilt, that it took me all of the those 4 months to really start understanding treatment and the AA way and how to best utilize these new tools that I downloaded from the amazing clinicians, counselors and other patients there.

My life has been changed forever – and I’m grateful for the change. I’ve been sober now for almost 28 months come this Jan 13. I never believed I could actually live my life without drinking. It had become such a huge part of my daily and nightly routine. I had tried to stop on my own in the past but the powerful nature of alcohol always found its way back into my life. I learned that I had to come to the realization that I was powerless over alcohol – and a power much greater than myself (and much greater than alcohol) was the only way to stop drinking and completely restore my sanity. God intervened and helped me to get my life back. With the help of my family and so many other professional clinical advisors and now numerous new sober forever friends, I’ve been able to get the train back on the tracks and live without the burden of alcohol. Now, I need to protect my family and protect my sobriety.
I have new healthy boundaries for the first time in my life. Only positive, loving, caring & understanding people may enter.

It’s an absolute blessing in ways I can barely put into proper words. But for now, I’ll just say – thank you God!! I wish there was a way I could give back to God what all God has given to me – but moving forward, I will do my best to reflect God’s light of love and grace onto others like so many have done for me. I hope y’all have an amazing 2024. Thank you for all the love, support and prayers. I promise you, I’ve felt them all and I’m super appreciative. Here’s to making the best of 2024 and living our most healthiest, happiest and goal oriented lives ever!! -JDR”

Bomb threats made to multiple state capitols force evacuations

On Wednesday, bomb threats across the nation forced the evacuation of multiple state Capitols, with law enforcement and state officials in Kentucky, Mississippi, Georgia, Connecticut, Montana, and Michigan confirming having received threats or reports of suspicious activity. None of the threats have been found to be credible at press time.

Kentucky Secretary of State communications director Michon Lindstrom said that a “mass email” containing the threat had been sent to lawmakers and state offices in at least 10 states, adding: “It just said ‘there is an explosive in your state Capitol,’ so it didn’t make any references to the secretary of state’s office specifically.” A copy of the email received by the Kentucky Secretary of State contained the subject line “Explosives inside of your State Capitol.” The email read: “I placed multiple explosives inside of your State Capitol. The explsoives are well hidden inside and they will go off in a few hours. I will make sure you all end up dead.” Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear wrote on X: “while everyone is safe, [state police] has asked everyone to evacuate the state Capitol and is investigating a threat received by the Secretary of State’s Office.” An all-clear was later issued following a sweep by law enforcement.

Gabriel Sterling, Georgia’s chief operating officer in the Office of the Georgia Secretary of State, wrote on X“Starting 2024 with a bomb threat at the Georgia State Capitol.”   Sterling later confirmed in a subsequent tweet that the “all clear has been given.”  Officials in Georgia, Michigan, and Connecticut all confirmed evacuations at their Capitols after threatening emails were sent to lawmakers and government officials. Connecticut State Capitol Police officer Scott Driscoll wrote in an email to Connecticut Capitol staff and lawmakers on Wednesday: “Earlier this morning, the Connecticut State Capitol Police received complaints from numerous employees about a suspicious email that was received. The email, which apparently was sent to numerous states, claimed to have placed multiple explosives in the Capitol Building.” The building was reopened after several hours of lockdown.

Michigan State Police said that lawmakers received a text message alert indicating they “must evacuate the building” at around 10:16 a.m. local time, and later wrote on X that “the Capitol was evacuated, the building searched, and the Michigan State Police currently has MSP Canine teams still sweeping the building. Out of an abundance of caution, the Capitol will remain closed for the rest of the day.”

In addition, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves wrote on X: “Today a bomb threat was made against our Mississippi Capitol building. Thankfully, the situation is clear. I’m incredibly thankful to the Capitol Police and all the Mississippi law enforcement officers who immediately responded to the incident.”

Montana’s Capitol had also been evacuated due to a bomb threat and that the threat was found to not be credible following an investigation by law enforcement. A spokesperson for the Montana Department of Administration shared: “In response to this morning’s bomb threat at the Montana State Capitol, Department of Administration General Services has been working closely with local law enforcement officials. A sweep has been completed, and the threat was found to not be credible. The building has been reopened to the public.”

Donald Trump asks Supreme Court to overturn Colorado ballot eligibility ruling

On Wednesday, former President Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court to overturn a state court ruling in Colorado that said he is ineligible to appear on the state primary ballot because of his actions leading up to the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

The Colorado Supreme Court based its ruling on Dec. 19th on language in the Constitution’s 14th Amendment that prohibits those who “engaged in insurrection” from running for various federal offices. The Colorado Republican Party had already filed its own appeal in the case; based on language in the state court ruling, Trump now remains on the Colorado ballot until the Supreme Court decides on Trump’s appeal.

Trump’s lawyers said in the filing that if the ruling is allowed to stand it would “mark the first time in the history of the United States that the judiciary has prevented voters from casting ballots for the leading major-party presidential candidate.”  They added that the court should “return the right to vote for their candidate of choice to the voters … only Congress has the authority to decide who is eligible to serve as president.” Trump’s legal team also argues that even if the provision could be applied to the former president, he did not engage in insurrection on Jan. 6, citing a “long history of political protests that have turned violent.”

The decision from Colorado’s high court reversed a lower court’s ruling in which a judge said Trump had engaged in insurrection by inciting the riot on Jan. 6, but that presidents are not subject to the insurrection clause of the 14th Amendment because they are not an “officer of the United States.” The state court said its ruling would remain on hold indefinitely, allowing Trump and his allies to file appeals with the Supreme Court.
