Al Roker returning to NBC’s ‘Today’ show after health scare

Al Roker is returning to the Today Show following several hospitalizations for blood clot complications at the end of 2022. Today show co-anchors Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb, and Craig Melvin announced Tuesday that the 68-year-old weather personality will appear on Friday’s episode of the long-running program, marking his first time on the how since late last year. Kotb said, “Well, we have our day. He’ll be here Friday. He’ll be right here in Studio 1A. This is his place. He’ll be in his seat right where he belongs. We cannot wait for that,” while Guthrie added: “Not the same without Al. Our sunshine is coming back Friday morning.”

Roker revealed on Nov. 18 that he was hospitalized for blood clots in his leg and lungs, which led to his absence from NBC’s broadcast of the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. He appeared virtually on the Today show in mid-December,  updating viewers on his condition:“This has been the hardest one yet, and you know, I’ve had my fair share of surgeries. But it gives you a profound sense of gratitude for this outpouring of prayers and thanks. I’m a very fortunate person.” Still, he said, “I feel good, I feel strong. And every day, I feel a little bit better … You lose a certain amount of muscle mass for every week you’re in the hospital, and I was in the hospital for four weeks. So it’s just a certain amount of weakness… I’ve got to just get my strength back.”

Suspect in University of Idaho killings planning to waive extradition to return to Idaho

The attorney for Bryan Kohberger — the suspect in the fatal stabbings of four University of Idaho students — plans to waive extradition at a hearing on Tuesday. Jason LaBar, the chief public defender for Monroe County, Pennsylvania (where Kohberger was arrested) said that his client planned to waive extradition to expedite his return to Idaho. According to a statement LaBar released Sunday on their behalf, Kohberger’s family said “there are no words that can adequately express the sadness we feel.”

University of Idaho students Madison Mogen, 21, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and her boyfriend, Ethan Chapin, 20, were stabbed to death in an off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho back in November 2022. Kohberger was arrested on Friday in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains after authorities had tracked him down. Police in Moscow, Idaho had been looking for a white Elantra as a possible piece of evidence; and a Hyundai Elantra was removed from Kohberger’s home in Pennsylvania on Friday. Moscow Police Chief James Fry said at a press conference Friday: “These murders have shaken our community and no arrest will ever bring back these young students. However, we do believe justice will be found through the criminal process.”

Latah County prosecutor Bill Thompson said that Kohberger, a graduate student at Washington State University, was charged with four counts of first-degree murder and felony burglary.

Tyson was a legend in the Canadian music scene as a folk, Western, and country-rock singer-songwriter, beginning his career as one-half of the folk duo Ian & Sylvia in 1959. By 1961, the pair became a full-fledged folk act, and them married in 1964. The duo would go on to found and front the country-rock group, The Great Speckled Bird, in 1969.  The pair released over a dozen albums, writing and performing hits like Tyson’s “Four Strong Winds” and “Someday Soon,” and Sylvia’s “You Were on My Mind.” Their songs have been covered countless times by the likes of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Judy Collins, and the couple mentored aspiring Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot.

The USGS said the quake about 30 miles south of Eureka and was centered about 9 miles southeast of Rio Dell and ocurred at 11:35 a.m. PDT. Rio Dell Mayor Debra Garnes told CNN: “It was crazy. The earthquake felt more violent this time. It was shorter, but more violent. My refrigerator moved 2 feet. Things came out of the refrigerator. There’s a crack in my wall from the violence of it.” In the earlier quake, Garnes said 27 homes were red-tagged, meaning they were unsafe due to damage, and 73 homes were yellow-tagged in Rio Dell.

Three NYPD officers injured in machete attack near New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square

Three New York City police officers are in stable condition after being struck by a man wielding a machete in an unprovoked attack near Times Square.

According to NYPD commissioner Keechant Sewell, the attack occurred just after 10 p.m. Saturday on West 52nd Street and 8th Avenue, outside a Times Square New Year’s Eve security screening zone. Sewell said the suspect, identified only as a 19-year-old man, approached an officer and attempted to strike him over the head with a machete. The suspect then struck two additional officers before one fired his service weapon, striking the suspect in the shoulder. The suspect is being treated for his injuries.

Officials said in an early New Year’s Day joint news conference that the FBI, NYPD and Joint Terrorism Task Force are leading the investigation into the attack. Mike Driscoll, FBI assistant director in charge of the New York field office, said: “I want to be very clear … there is no ongoing threat. We believe this was a sole individual at this time. There is nothing to indicate otherwise.” Driscoll said the FBI, through the task force, is working closely with NYPD to determine the nature of the attack and “will run every lead to the ground.” The authorities did not elaborate on a possible motive and said the investigation is in preliminary stages.

One of the injured officers suffered a skull fracture and a large laceration to his head, Sewell said. Another officer, an 8-year veteran, suffered a laceration, and Sewell did not elaborate on injuries to the third officer.

George Strait reveals plans to release new album

During a recent interview with Cowboys & Indians, country legend George Strait mentioned his plans to release a new album ‘soon.’  Said Strait: “I like making records and plan on doing another one soon. I’m narrowing down my song choices now.” The last album that Strait released was Honky Tonk Time Machine in 2019, featuring hits such as “Every Little Honky Tonk Bar,” “Two More Wishes,” and “God and Country Music.”

Strait shared that he attributes his long-term success to believing in his music, as well as working with the best in the business to create new music. Said Strait: “A great melody can sell a song the best. A great lyric with a lousy melody maybe not so much, but a great lyric along with a great melody is obviously what you’re looking to create.”

Strait will also be hitting the road in 2023, performing six stadium shows across the country beginning in May with support from Chris Stapleton and Little Big Town.
