CDC panel recommends not getting J&J Covid-19 vaccine if Pfizer or Moderna vaccine is available

An advisory panel to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday that people shouldn’t get the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine when the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna shots are available.  The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices convened following an update from the Food and Drug Administration on the risk of rare but potentially life-threatening blood clots linked to the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. At least 54 people in the United States — mainly women — have been hospitalized from these blood clots, and nine people have died.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices panel voted unanimously in favor of deeming the mRNA vaccines, from Pfizer and Moderna, the “preferred” options for adults over the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, ultimately concluding that the mRNA vaccines provided greater protection and fewer risks than Johnson & Johnson’s. The recommendation would not prohibit use of the Johnson & Johnson shot, but instead make clear that the other options are a better choice if they are available.  CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky will need to sign off on the recommendation.

Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine is linked to a blood clotting condition known as thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome, or TTS.  Johnson & Johnson uses an adenovirus technology to train the immune system to fight the coronavirus, whereas the shots developed by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna use a different approach, mRNA, to train the immune system, and have not been linked to these clots.

The Biden administration is urging all eligible Americans to get a booster amid the threat of the omicron variant. Initial data suggests three shots of the mRNA vaccines provide adequate protection against the new strain. In the U.S., the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are readily available. More than 570 million doses of Pfizer and Moderna have been delivered to providers, whereas only 28 million doses of Johnson & Johnson have been delivered.

President Biden signs bill to raise federal debt ceiling by $2.5 trillion

On Thursday, President Joe Biden signed a bill to raise the U.S. debt ceiling by $2.5 trillion after Senate Democrats and Republicans hammered out a deal this week to avoid a filibuster. The Senate passed the extension by a party-line vote of 50-49 on Tuesday, and the House approved the measure 221-209.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen had warned Congress that defaulting on the national debt could have had catastrophic consequences for the U.S. economy. The United States has never defaulted on its debt obligations. Failing to reach an agreement would have stopped payments that millions of Americans rely on, including paychecks to federal workers, Medicare benefits and military salaries.

The debt ceiling increase covers all necessary funding until 2023, meaning the issue won’t need to be addressed again until after the 2022 midterm elections.

Chris Noth accused of sexual assault by two women

Two women have accused actor Chris Noth of sexually assaulting them, with the alleged incidents occurring in 2004 and 2015.

In a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, the first woman (using the pseudonym Zoe) told the publication that she met Noth shortly after moving to Los Angeles at age 22, while she was working at a “high-profile” firm that did business with celebrities in 2004. She claimed she was later invited to the pool at his West Hollywood apartment building, where she alleges she was sexually assaulted. The second woman, going by the pseudonym Lily, said she met Noth in 2015 at a New York City bar where she worked as a server. Lily, 25 at the time, said Noth invited her out to dinner and she accepted. After dinner they went to his apartment, when the alleged assault took place.

In a statement, Noth, 67, denied the allegations and claimed that “the encounters were consensual.”  Said Noth: “The accusations against me made by individuals I met years, even decades, ago are categorically false. These stories could’ve been from 30 years ago or 30 days ago — no always means no — that is a line I did not cross. It’s difficult not to question the timing of these stories coming out. I don’t know for certain why they are surfacing now, but I do know this: I did not assault these women.”

The news comes just one week after the return of Noth’s Sex and the City character John James Preston, AKA Mr. Big, in ‘And Just Like That… ‘  The show made headlines when in the first episode, Mr. Big died after taking a spin class on his Peloton at-home exercise bike.

Jeff Garlin leaves ABC’s ‘The Goldbergs’ amid allegations of on-set misconduct

Actor Jeff Garlin has left the ABC sitcom ‘The Goldbergs’ amid allegation of on-set misconduct and an ongoing HR investigation. According to reports, Garlin’s departure, effective immediately, was reportedly a mutual decision between the show and himself. ‘The Goldbergs’ are in the middle of filming their ninth season; it’s unclear how the show will handle the departure of the actor who played the patriarch of the show’s titular family.

No formal allegations against Garlin have been made public; however, rumors about his workplace conduct have been circulating for some time, and three former ‘The Goldbergs’ employees recently told Vanity Fair that the actor allegedly engaged in a verbal and physical conduct that made people uncomfortable.

Garlin also spoke with Vanity Fair and denied rumors at the time that he’d been fired, but confirmed he’d been under HR investigations for three years. Garlin said that the issue was a “difference of opinion” between himself and Sony: “My opinion is, I have my process about how I’m funny, in terms of the scene and what I have to do. They feel that it makes for a quote ‘unsafe’ workspace. Now, mind you, my silliness making an unsafe workspace — I don’t understand how that is. And I’m on a comedy show. I am always a kind and thoughtful person. I make mistakes, sure. But my comedy is about easing people’s pain. Why would I ever want to cause pain in anybody for a laugh? That’s bullying. That’s just uncalled for.” Garlin was also asked about the allegations that he made people uncomfortable by touching and hugging them. “If I hug someone, and they feel uncomfortable from it, they have every right to even go to HR,” Garlin said. “But HR has never said a word to me about hugs. Just so we’re clear on that.”

President Biden visits Kentucky to survey damage from deadly tornadoes

On Wednesday, President Joe Biden traveled to Kentucky to survey damage from last week’s deadly tornadoes and offer federal support for the victims. More than 30 tornadoes tore through Kentucky and four other states over the weekend, killing at least 88 people — 74 of them in Kentucky — and leaving many others still unaccounted for. The storms demolished homes and downed power lines as temperatures dropped below freezing in Kentucky earlier this week.

Biden visited Fort Campbell for a storm briefing and Mayfield and Dawson Springs to survey the damage. Biden said during his remarks: “The scope and scale of this destruction is almost beyond belief. These tornadoes devoured everything in their path.” Biden also authorized the government to cover 100% of the state’s costs for the first 30 days for all emergency work and services related to the devastation in Kentucky. Biden said four FEMA search and rescue teams were working in Kentucky, and the agency has provided critical supplies including 61 generators, drinking water, housing and meals.

The president also signed two federal disaster declarations for Kentucky over the weekend, providing federal aid for search and rescue and cleanup operations, as well as aid for temporary housing and to help individuals and businesses recover.

Federal Reserve easing back on COVID-related stimulus, forecasting rate hikes in 2022

The Federal Reserve decided Wednesday to maintain the existing federal funds rate of between zero and 0.25% amid rising inflation. The Federal Reserve also forecasted three interest rate hikes next year, followed by further increases in 2023 and 2024. A statement on the decision reads: “Supply and demand imbalances related to the pandemic and the reopening of the economy have continued to contribute to elevated levels of inflation. Overall financial conditions remain accommodative, in part reflecting policy measures to support the economy and the flow of credit to U.S. households and businesses.”

The Federal Reserve’s Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) announced it would slowly begin curtailing the monthly pace of its net asset purchases by $20 billion for Treasury securities and $10 billion for agency mortgage-backed securities, anticipating “similar reductions in the pace of net asset purchases will likely be appropriate each month, but it is prepared to adjust the pace of purchases if warranted by changes in the economic outlook.”

The FOMC acknowledged positive job gains in recent months and declining unemployment rate. But it also added that “supply and demand imbalances related to the pandemic and the reopening of the economy have continued to contribute to elevated levels of inflation. Overall financial conditions remain accommodative, in part reflecting policy measures to support the economy and the flow of credit to U.S. households and businesses.”

Carly Pearce announces second leg of her ’29’ tour for 2022

Carly Pearce has announced she’ll continue her headlining ’29 Tour’ in 2022, with the next leg kicking off on March 10.  The ’29 Tour’ takes its name from Pearce’s seven-song EP ‘29′ and subsequent full-length project, ‘29: Written in Stone,’ which added eight new tracks to the ones included on the first version of the record. Joining Pearce on tour is rising country act Hannah Ellis. Tickets for the new dates go on sale on Friday (Dec. 17) at carlypearce.com.

Pearce said of the new leg of the tour: “The experiences that allowed me to write 29 and 29: Written in Stone were some of the most difficult moments of my life, but seeing so many faces singing every word of these 15 songs night after night reminded me of how powerful honesty can be in connecting with others. The way you all showed up is so special, and I’m so grateful to announce another round of The 29 Tour.”

On this new chapter of her tour, Pearce is partnering with nonprofit organization Plus1, which according to their website “aids those in the music industry in supporting social and environmental justice initiatives.”   One dollar of every ticket sold on Carly’s ’29 Tour” will benefit tornado relief efforts in her home state of Kentucky — one of the hardest hit during a sweeping tornado outbreak in mid-December. Pearce explains of her decision to partner with Plus1:  “There are a lot of people from my Kentucky home who are going through a really devastating time right now with their lives completely changed overnight so having the opportunity to help with some of the rebuilding is so important to me.”

Garth Brooks announces two back-to-back Las Vegas shows in February 2022

Garth Brooks is heading to Las Vegas in early February for two back-to-back shows billed as “Garth Brooks: The ONE Man Show,” to take place at Dolby Live at Park MGM on Feb. 4 and Feb. 5.

The double-header are just days before Brooks turns 60 years old on Feb. 7, and Brooks says the dates will serve as a birthday party of sorts, noting in a press release: “I look forward to celebrating my birthday early that weekend in Vegas. Getting to sing and hear everyone singing is my favorite thing.”

Brooks postponed most of his 2021 tour plans due to the rise of the Delta variant of COVID-19, during which time he opted instead for smaller, more intimate shows at Nashville venues like the Ryman Auditorium and the Grand Ole Opry.  Brooks has stated that his 2022 Stadium Tour will be its final year; he’s hinted that he’s already planning something new when the run concludes.

Tickets for Brooks’ Vegas shows go on sale Dec. 22 at 10AM PST. Limited seating is available, and there will be a six-ticket cap per purchase.
