President Biden signs several executive orders in response to the COVID-19 pandemic

President Joe Biden signed several executive orders on Thursday in the hopes of quickly implementing his administration’s response to the COVID-19 crisis. The orders laid out an aggressive new strategy to fight the pandemic.

In addition to the executive actions, Biden unveiled a new, nearly 200-page national strategy during an announcement at the White House, saying, “This plan is comprehensive, based on science, not politics. It’s based on truth, not denial. And it’s based on detail. Help is on the way.” The Biden administration said under the plan, the federal government will use its resources and influence for a more effective national response, as well as to help state and local governments.

Thursday’s orders will utilize the Defense Production Act to increase supplies necessary for conducting large-scale vaccine distribution and to increase testing, as well as producing more masks and other protective equipment. The administration is also working to establish a pandemic testing board. Officials said the Biden administration will also “clarify” health insurance companies’ obligation to cover COVID-19 testing.

The complaint comes more than two weeks after the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol led by supporters of former President Donald Trump.

Cruz and Hawley both raised formal objections during the joint session to confirm Electoral College results and voted against states’ election results after Congress reconvened following the attack.

Actress Christina Ricci Granted Domestic Violence Restraining Order Against Estranged Husband

Actress Christina Ricci has been granted a restraining order against her estranged husband, James Heerdegen, whom she is accusing of domestic abuse. Ricci filed for the restraining order claiming multiple incidents had led to her fearing for her life and that of her son.  The domestic violence restraining order requires Heerdegen to remain 100 yards away from her and their son, and to have no contact with them.

Ricci alleges that she became “trapped” in her house with Heerdegen due to the Covid-19 pandemic after telling him she wanted a divorce. She claims he attacked her twice in June last year and left her with physical injuries, and alleges that one of the attacks took place in front of their six-year-old son. People reports that Ricci filed to the court several photos of injuries she claimed to have suffered from Heerdegen.

Heerdegen’s lawyer Larry Bakman said that he plans to file his own restraining order over allegations of “her abusive conduct fuelled by alcohol and substance abuse”.   Bakman also said his client “unequivocally denies all allegations of abuse made by [Ricci] as having occurred in 2020.”

President Biden signs executive orders on his first day in office after inauguration ceremony

President Joe Biden on Wednesday signed multiple executive orders that will set the tone for his new administration, aimimg to immediately reverse policies by President Donald Trump.

As one of his first acts as president, Biden signed the 17 orders before reporters in the Oval Office. Among the orders was one mandating that the United States rejoin the Paris Agreement on climate change. Trump announced the U.S. departure from the pact in 2017. The process to rejoin will take 30 days.

On the topic of the COVID-19 pandemic, Biden halted the United States’ withdrawal from the World Health Organization and also signed an order requiring face coverings to be worn inside all federal buildings in the country for the first 100 days of his presidency. Masks and distancing will be required in federal buildings and state and local governments will be asked to do the same.

Wednesday’s orders also reverse several policies on immigration, including an expansion under Trump of immigration enforcement in the United States and halting construction of the wall along the Mexico border by terminating the national emergency declaration that was used to help pay for it. Biden also reversed Trump administration restrictions on U.S. entry for travelers from primarily Muslim and African countries.

At the U.S. Capitol earlier in the day, Biden signed the Inauguration Day Proclamation and two documents making his nominations to the Cabinet and sub-Cabinet official.
