Ellen DeGeneres Kicks Off Season 18 Of Talk Show And Addresses Toxic Workplace Allegations

Ellen DeGeneres returned on Monday to kick off the Season 18 premiere of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and addressed workplace misconduct allegations against her and her team.  The daytime talk show came under investigation over the summer for being a “toxic” workplace. DeGeneres has been at the center of a scandal after BuzzFeed News published a report in July 2020 which detailed staffers negative experiences on the Ellen set, including claims of being penalized for taking medical leave, and fear of retribution for raising complaints.

DeGeneres said in her opening monologue, “If you’re watching, because you love me, thank you. If you’re watching it because you don’t love me, welcome. How was everybody’s summer? Good. Yeah, mine was great. Terrific. I’m so happy to be back in the studio. There are a lot of things I want to talk about. I’ve been looking forward to addressing it all directly and unfortunately talking directly to people has been illegal for six months.”

She continued, “As you may have heard, this summer there were allegations of a toxic work environment at our show and then there was an investigation. I learned that things happened here that never should have happened. I take that very seriously and I want to say I am so sorry to the people who were affected. I know that I’m in a position of privilege and power and I realized that with that comes responsibility, and I take responsibility for what happens at my show.”

DeGeneres went on to say that the upcoming season represents the start of a “new chapter” for everyone working on the show, following an investigation that resulted in the dismissal of two executive producers.

Supreme Court Will Fly Flags At Half-Staff For 30 Days In Memoriam of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg

The U.S. Supreme Court said that flags on court’s front plaza will be flown at half-staff for 30 days in honor of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died on Friday.  The Court added that a black drape has been hung over the doors to the courtroom.

In a statement on Sunday, the court said Ginsburg’s bench chair and the bench directly in front of it have also been draped in black wool crepe as part of the tradition for the death of a sitting justice. Visitors to the Supreme Court have left flowers and signs in tribute to Ginsburg. Ginsburg was on the Supreme Court since 1993.

Joe Biden Blasts President Trump’s Plan To Push For Supreme Court Nominee Prior To Election

On Sunday, democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden urged Senate Republicans not to vote on any candidate nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court as the November election draws closer. Biden’s speech came one day after second Senate Republican voiced objections to Trump’s plan for a quick vote on a replacement for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who passed away on Friday. Such an appointment by the president, if approved by the Senate, would cement a 6-3 conservative majority that could influence American law.

Biden called President Donald Trump’s plan an “exercise of raw political power,” and added, “voters of this country should be heard … they’re the ones who this Constitution envisions should decide who has the power to make this appointment.” Biden said that if he wins the Nov. 3 election, he should have the chance to nominate the next Supreme Court justice.

The former vice president rejected the idea of releasing the names of potential nominees, saying that doing so, as Trump did, could improperly influence those candidates’ decisions in their current court roles as well as subject them to “unrelenting political attacks.”

Trump said on Saturday he would make his nomination this week and named Amy Coney Barrett of the Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and Barbara Lagoa of the Atlanta-based 11th Circuit as possible candidates to fill the vacancy created by Ginsburg, a revered figure among liberals.

Giuliana Rancic and Vivica A. Fox Miss Emmys Pre-Show After Testing Positive For COVID-19

Giuliana Rancic and Vivica A. Fox announced Sunday they would not be hosting the E! channel’s Emmy Awards pre-show special because they tested positive for COVID-19.

Rancic, 46, said in a video statement Sunday: “Hey, everyone. As I go into my 20th year on the E! red carpet, I have to say I do not take missing an award show lightly, but unfortunately this year is just so different. As part of E! and NBCUniversal’s very strict testing guidelines, especially before an event like this, I did find out that I tested positive for COVID-19. Now as much as I didn’t want to hear that, I’m very thankful I heard it before I traveled and possibly could have exposed other people. So, for that, I’m thankful.” Rancic went on to say her husband Bill and their son Duke also tested positive, but everyone is “doing well and taking care each other.”

Fox, 56, also missed the show, saying in a statement:  “I am terribly sorry I cannot be with my E! family tonight! Unfortunately, I have tested positive for the coronavirus. So, in an abundance of caution, I am isolating myself at home.”

Hurricane Sally Leaves Destruction Along Gulf Coast, Leaving 2 Dead

Hurricane Sally slammed the Gulf Coast of Alabama and the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday as a Cat 2 storm, with 100 mph winds, two and a half feet of rain and a surge of seawater. At least two people in Alabama and Georgia were killed. Heavy rains are expected to wreak havoc from Virginia to North Carolina throughout the night before the storm moves out over the Atlantic.

Sally has since been downgraded to a post-tropical depression, but parts of Pensacola on the Florida Panhandle were deluged with nearly 30 inches of rain, causing some streets to look like rivers with whitecaps at times.

As of Thursday afternoon, more than half a million people across Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Louisiana were without power.

Federal Judge Temporarily Blocks USPS Operational Changes

A federal judge on Thursday placed a temporary block on operational changes to the U.S. Postal Service that have been cited for causing a slowdown in mail delivery. U.S. District Judge Stanley Bastian granted a request from Washington and 13 other states to issue a temporary injunction against the policies implemented under Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, saying backlogs in mail “likely will slow down the delivery of ballots” in November’s election.

Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson led the lawsuit, which called for the USPS to halt a policy requiring postal trucks to leave at specified times even if some mail is being loaded, to treat all election mail as First Class mail regardless of postage, and to replace, reassemble or reconnect mail-sorting machines that have been removed

Judge Bastian said that his preliminary injunction would be issued “essentially in the form presented by the states” but it was not immediately clear how long it would remain in effect.
